Stage 1 — Filing
One of you opens the case. These six documents are filed together with the $300 court fee (fee waiver available).
Stage 2 — Service & the fork
Your spouse confirms they got the papers — one signature, no sheriff. Then the couple picks a path: quiet default ($0) or a formal appearance ($175).
Stage 3 — Your agreement
What you two already decided, written down and signed. A NJ attorney can review it before you sign — that door is built in.
Stage 4 — Judgment by mail
Each of you signs one certification asking the judge to finish it on the papers (Directive #01-25). The signed judgment arrives in the mail.
Who files here
If you or your spouse live in Hackensack, Fort Lee, Paramus, or Teaneck — or anywhere else in Bergen County — this is your court. New Jersey asks that one of you has lived in the state for at least 12 months before filing.
Venue — which county you file in — is normally where you lived when the marriage broke down, or where the filing spouse lives now. If you're unsure, ask the court clerk.
